The alarm clock went off, scaring me to death. Five o’clock in the morning? Why did I set it for so early?? Then I remembered; Lasik eye surgery. I’d only been dreading this day for a month, ever since Dr. Steinfield prescribed the operation. I nudged my husband; he was to drive me to and from the hospital, having managed to get a day off from work. “Fred. Fred! Get up, it’s time to leave!” Fred yawned, stretched, groaned, and looked like he was getting ready to return to his snoring and slumber. “Fred.” “I know, sweetie, OK,” Fred muttered, rubbing his eyes. Before we knew it we were checking in, and there was Harriet from down the block, reading Ladies’ Home Journal in the lobby. “Joe’s having bypass surgery,” she whispered to us. She sounded happy about it! “All right, honey, you go ahead and sign in and I’ll keep Harriet company,” Fred said, winking at me. “You better not try anything funny,” I laughed. Oh, was I frightened. The next thing I knew we were getting back in the car! Was it really over, that quick? My pupils were dilating like they were running a marathon, but otherwise—I felt fine! “Mickey D’s, anyone?” Fred burst out, turning the radio to his favorite rock station, way too loud.
